While studying Culinary Management at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario, I had the opportunity to compete in the Escoffier Society Culinary Salon. I got to work one on one with my favourite instructor Bonnie Gordon and learn about creating cakes. This being my very first cake I had no expectations of winning however this, my first tiered cake, won a bronze medal at the Culinary Salon. It was this event that pulled me into the world of cake design.
After draduating, starting a family and relocating to Owen Sound I began my business, Creations in Cake.
Almost all of what I know about cake decorating has been self taught. My business ran very successfully for five years when I was offered a job in teaching baking and pastry arts at Georgian College in Owen Sound. For a year I tried to juggle my business and teaching but it became clear that I needed to choose.
Now a Red Seal Pastry Chef I teach Introduction to Baking, Advanced Baking and Patisserie to the Culinary Skills, Culinary Management and Culinary Apprentices at the Owen Sound Campus. I also teach other more casual baking and cake decorating classes in the evenings.
The career shift into eduction was an unexpected one but I love being able to share my passion with my students. Meanwhile the Canadian Cake Decorators Guild helps me keep in touch with the cake world.
